There’s no doubt that FURIOUS 7 will be making some serious money when it opens on April 3, but Vin Diesel thinks the film's success will go beyond mere money making; he’s predicting that FURIOUS 7 will take home the best picture Oscar at 2016’s Academy Awards.
Vin Diesel spoke to Variety:
Universal is going to have the biggest movie in history with this movie, it will probably win best picture at the Oscars, unless the Oscars don’t want to be relevant ever. There is nothing that will ever come close to the power of this thing.
While I am a fan of the series (since FAST FIVE at least) and an even bigger fan of Vin Diesel himself (another RIDDICK film please!) I’m under no illusion as to what kind of films these are. They’re big budget popcorn entertainment filled with a group of actors having a blast; Oscar-caliber films they are not, and there’s nothing wrong with that. That said, I think we all know that an Oscar win (or nomination) doesn't make a film good by default, just as a lack of a win (or nomination) doesn't make a film bad. We like the films we like and we support the ones we want to see succeed. I trust the word of my fellow movie lovers over the Academy any day.
Surprisingly, or not, this isn’t the first time Diesel has talked Oscar in relation to the Fast & Furious franchise; he said something similar several years ago in regards to FAST FIVE. I don't need to remind you how many Oscars that film won.
FURIOUS 7 is set to hit theaters on April 3, 2015. Almost there!
