According to THR, the filmmaking team of Dan Berk and Robert Olsen – who directed the horror film VILLAINS, starring Bill Skarsgård (IT and IT CHAPTER TWO) and Maika Monroe (IT FOLLOWS) – are now currently developing a horror-thriller for Amblin, whose "[p]lot details are being held deep in a vault, but the project is described as being 'social horror.'"
Sounds intriguing, as "social horror" could mean anything. Is it dealing with the Hellscape of communicating through social media? The current crisis of distancing and isolation? Or the intense existential ennui of basic interpersonal interactions, like family reunions? The mind reels.
Now, obviously no start or release date announced as of yet, but we'll definitely keep you posted as more information on this project comes in!
Meanwhile, Berk and Olsen's aforementioned breakout film VILLAINS was about
Mickey and Jules are lovers on the run, headed southbound for a fresh start in the Sunshine State. When their car dies after a gas station robbery, they break into a nearby house looking for a new set of wheels. What they find instead is a dark secret and a sweet-as-pie pair of homeowners who will do anything to keep it from getting out.
So what do you guys think? Any fans of their previous film? If so, what do you think they mean by "social horror"? Either way, sound off below!
