Netflix had picked up a Vikings sequel series from creator Michael Hirst even before the original series completed its six season run. We’ve already seen one teaser for Vikings Valhalla and with the release of the sequel series just a few weeks away, Netflix has released the full official trailer for the series.
Set over a thousand years ago in the early 11th century, Vikings: Valhalla chronicles the heroic adventures of some of the most famous Vikings who ever lived — the legendary explorer Leif Eriksson (Sam Corlett), his fiery and headstrong sister Freydis Eriksdotter (Frida Gustavsson), and the ambitious Nordic prince Harald Sigurdsson (Leo Suter). As tensions between the Vikings and the English royals reach a bloody breaking point and as the Vikings themselves clash over their conflicting Christian and pagan beliefs, these three Vikings begin an epic journey that will take them across oceans and through battlefields, from Kattegat to England and beyond, as they fight for survival and glory.
Vikings Valhalla showrunner Jeb Stuart told Entertainment Weekly that although this is a sequel series, you certainly don’t have to watch the original series to dive in. For those that are familiar with the original, there will be a few recognizable names and locations and it’s also been teased that a few loose ends involving Rollo will be tied up. “As a fan of Vikings and a student of that particular type of history, you do know that Rollo really was part of the founding of Normandy, and Emma of Normandy comes over and becomes one of my main characters, and William the Conqueror is a descendant of Rollo,” Stuart explained. “We’d love to be able to get to that part of the story and get to that place that Michael did say you stop and you turn and nostalgically look back at the Viking era.” If you’re a fan of the original series, did the Vikings Valhalla trailer provide enough to ensure your return?
Vikings Valhalla will debut on Netflix on February 25th.
