We all know that Viggo Mortensen can kick some serious ass when he needs to, but CAPTAIN FANTASTIC gives him a different kind of fight. The story follows a father devoted to raising his six kids in the forests of the Pacific Northwest with a rigorous physical and intellectual education. After the death of his wife, he is forced to leave his paradise and enter the “real world,” challenging his idea of what it means to be a parent.
The name might not sound familiar, but Matt Ross is the actor who put the moves on Patrick Bateman in the bathroom in AMERICAN PSYCHO. I can’t say I’ve seen his previous film, 28 HOTEL ROOMS, but you can’t do any wrong in casting Viggo Mortensen. This story may have come off like a typical family drama, but Viggo brings such a sense of genuine feeling to his characters, that you can’t help but get caught up in it. Perhaps FANTASTIC will prove to be a sleeper in the midst of a the summer movie season.
CAPTAIN FANTASTIC will open in theaters on July 8, 2016.
