VHS Retro Art Round-up: Elvira, Surf Nazis Must Die, Don’t Look Now and more

Every child of the 80s will remember going to the video store and trying to find a movie to rent. Back before the days of Blu-ray and On Demand, selecting a movie usually meant finding the flick with the coolest box art. Like modern posters, classic VHS art has been lost but thanks to the Internet there are countless reminders of these cool creations. This column will be dedicated to bringing you reminders of a bygone era and a look at how cool some of these movies looked on store shelves.

BATMAN RETURNS

After the iconic poster for the 1989 BATMAN, Tim Burton's sequel was able to simply add snow to the same logo, but the character poster featuring the three main characters is just as lasting of an image that makes for a great box cover. Click here to purchase on Blu-ray/DVD.

SURF NAZIS MUST DIE!

A great title can usually excuse almost any finished movie and the classic title for this Troma picture fits the bill. It is hard to figure out just what the hell is going on in this movie but the cover art pretty much sums it up. Click here to purchase on Blu-ray/DVD.

THE BLOOD-SPATTERED BRIDE

Another self-explanatory title, this movie just needs to feature a bride and blood and it does what it needs too. Oh, look! They got it right!.  Click here to purchase on Blu-ray/DVD.

LUTHER THE GEEK

I remember staying the hell away from this VHS cover any time I went to my local West Coast Video. For some reason, the cover just creeped me out despite only showing a mouth. A creepy mouth, but just a mouth. Click here to purchase on Blu-ray/DVD.

DON'T LOOK NOW

One of my all-time favorite movies, DON'T LOOK NOW has a beautiful poster that doesn't betray thee creepy as f*ck twist at the end. The European cover is a slightly more revealing but definitely keeps the mood and tone in line. Click here to purchase on Blu-ray/DVD.

ELVIRA: MISTRESS OF THE DARK

This movie is bad. Really bad But, it still feels like a horror version of PEE-WEE'S BIG ADVENTURE to me. But with more boobs. Click here to purchase on Blu-Ray/DVD.

Feel free to pop us your favorite VHS box art and come back for each future column. You can send your finds or photos of your own VHS tapes to alexmaidy@joblo.com
