A fourth installment of the V/H/S horror anthology franchise is on the way and it will be released exclusively later this year on the horror streaming service Shudder.
Titled V/H/S/94, the film gets into motion when a mysterious VHS tape is discovered, which results in the warehouse raid by a police swat team. The team finds several tapes from a cult that reveal a horrifying conspiracy. Filmmakers involved with the latest installment include David Bruckner, Simon Barrett, Timo Tjahjanto, Chloe Okuno, Jennifer Reeder, and Ryan Prows. Producer Josh Goldbloom and Craig Engler had this to say about working with Shudder on the film's release:
"Thrilled seems like an understatement for just how stoked we all are to partner with Shudder. We shot the film entirely during the pandemic building sets in hotels, conference rooms, and in the spirit of the series punk rock roots we even ventured underground into a sewer. Our team channeled the misery of this past year appropriately, so rest assured it's the biggest, baddest, and most bloodthirsty batch of tapes yet."
The newest V/H/S installment will be breaking from the anthology tradition of storytelling and will instead be presented as a single narrative, with each segment being more linked into a fluid story. The first film of the franchise was released in 2012 after premiering at the Sundance Film Festival in the same year. In the film, each entry is a collection of short found-footage horror films, built into the framework of a central narrative that connects them together. The movie spawned two sequels, V/H/S/2 and V/H/S: Viral, and a spin-off, Siren. The first film is actually quite good and the "Amateur Night" segment is a personal favorite. I just watched it again recently and it still generates chills.
V/H/S/94 will release in North America, the U.K., Ireland, Australia, and New Zealand as a Shudder Original. While no official release date has been set, the film is expected to drop later this year.
