Lionsgate revived the '80s – '90s video brand Vestron Video back in 2016, putting the name on a line of special edition Blu-rays for films like CHOPPING MALL, WAXWORK, RETURN OF THE LIVING DEAD III, THE GATE, WISHMASTER, WARLOCK, SLAUGHTER HIGH, CLASS OF 1999, and more. The last Vestron release was Stephen King's MAXIMUM OVERDRIVE, which hit store shelves in October of 2018. Now, just when it looked like Vestron had been put back in the vault, it has been announced that there are two new Vestron Video releases heading our way.
Scheduled to reach stores sometime in September are Blu-rays of the 1989 kid-friendly comedy LITTLE MONSTERS (which isn't to be confused with the 2019 film LITTLE MONSTERS) and David Cronenberg's 1975 outbreak classic SHIVERS.
Directed by Richard Alan Greenberg from a screenplay by Terry Rossio and Ted Elliott, LITTLE MONSTERS stars Fred Savage, Howie Mandel, and Daniel Stern. The story:
Suppose you proved there really were monsters under your bed? And what if you suddenly found yourself journeying with one of them into their very strange world? That's what happens to Fred Savage when he meets Maurice (Mandel), a hyperkinetic, wild, wacky, and hip monster. His bizarre, under-the-bed world is everything a boy could want; "No parents, no homework, and all the junk food you can eat." Brian (Savage) learns how monsters come up under any kid's bed and uses this ability to pay back the school bully. But there's a catch! Brian soon gets trapped in a frightening nightmare that is all too real!
Written and directed by David Cronenberg, SHIVERS is also known as THEY CAME FROM WITHIN. Starring Paul Hampton, Joe Silver, Lynn Lowery, and Barbara Steele, the film has the following synopsis:
The residents of Starliner Island enjoy a luxurious and opulent lifestyle incorporating the best in country living with the services of the nearby city… until something goes wrong. A strange disease begins to infect the residents, causing violent outbreaks of uncontrollable violence combined with unusual sexual behavior.
The special features that will be on these Blu-rays have not yet been revealed, but it's cool to know that we have more Vestron Video to look forward to.
