Instead of the supernatural, THE CONJURING's Vera Farmiga will find herself dealing with a very different threat in GODZILLA: KING OF THE MONSTERS, but as she tells Metro, her character may have a way of dealing with them. The upcoming Michael Dougherty film is a sequel to Gareth Edwards' 2014 film, which kicked off Legendary's MonsterVerse franchise which also includes King Kong.
Vera Farmiga plays Dr. Emma Russell in GODZILLA: KING OF THE MONSTERS, a paleobiologist who has "figured out a way to communicate with the creatures and potentially control them using their bioacoustics on a sonar level. So she is like a DJ for the monsters." It will be interesting to see just how far this communication goes, although I could also picture it back-firing spectacularly. Godzilla don't listen to anyone! Production on the film wrapped up last year, but Farmiga mentioned during the interview, which took place last month, that she still had another day of additional photography ahead of her. Also starring in the film will be Kyle Chandler (FIRST MAN) as Farmiga's husband and Millie Bobby Brown (Stranger Things) as her daughter, with Zhang Ziyi (THE CLOVERFIELD PARADOX), Bradley Whitford (The Handmaid's Tale), Thomas Middleditch (Silicon Valley), O'Shea Jackson Jr. (STRAIGHT OUTTA COMPTON), Charles Dance (Game of Thrones), and Aisha Hinds (True Blood) also appearing. Ken Watanabe (DETECTIVE PIKACHAU) and Sally Hawkins (THE SHAPE OF WATER) will be reprising their roles from GODZILLA 2014 as well. Vera Farmiga then teased what she believes GODZILLA: KING OF THE MONSTERS is about:
And ‘Godzilla’ to me isn’t a film about monsters. It is a film about saving the environment. When it comes down to it that’s what emerged to me off the written page, and so I find that there has to be a little parable in it that makes me interested.
The official synopsis for GODZILLA: KING OF THE MONSTERS:
The new story follows the heroic efforts of the crypto-zoological agency Monarch as its members face off against a battery of god-sized monsters, including the mighty Godzilla, who collides with Mothra, Rodan, and his ultimate nemesis, the three-headed King Ghidorah. When these ancient super-species—thought to be mere myths—rise again, they all vie for supremacy, leaving humanity’s very existence hanging in the balance.
GODZILLA: KING OF THE MONSTERS will hit theaters on May 31, 2019.
