Native Americans aren't happy at all about Adam Sandler's THE RIDICULOUS SIX, but one of the film's stars has spoken out in support of the upcoming comedy. Vanilla Ice (who also appeared in Sandler's THAT'S MY BOY) is playing Mark Twain in the Netflix movie, and TMZ asked the actor/rapper/home flipper to share his thoughts about the actors claiming that the film is derogatory to Native Americans.
It's a comedy. I don't think anybody really had any ill feeling or any intent or anything. This movie isn't [Dances] With Wolves' — it's a comedy. They're not there to showcase anything about anybody — they're just making a funny movie…I am part Choctaw Indian, so I see both sides, but you know, it is what it is.
Indian Country Today has released a video of the Native American actors confronting one of the producers and other crew members, and Defamer has also posted several excerpts from a 2012 draft of the script. If the final script is anything like this version, I can definitely see why the Native American actors decided to walk off of the set of the film.
In my opinion, this isn't about Millennials being "soft" or political correctness gone mad. I don't think THE RIDICULOUS SIX is taking satire too far, but those jokes above are lazy, dumb, and just aren't funny. Do you think this controversy will go away, or does Netflix have a real issue on its hands?
THE RIDICULOUS SIX will be released on Netflix sometime in 2016.
