It's Valentine's day weekend so of course we're gonna give Jamie Blank's 2001 slasher Valentine (WATCH IT HERE – OWN IT HERE) some love! The early 2000s were a sort of re-birth for the horror genre. With the popularity of the J-Horror Boom and New French Extremity, it became clear that tastes were changing. The slasher sub-genre was on life support before Scream came along in 1997 and revitalized it. This brings us to our latest BLACK SHEEP episode entry.
While horror was changing at home and overseas, the Scream boom was wearing thin, and the "self-aware" witty slasher couldn't quite compete with the pessimistic and brute force of the new millennium. But maybe Valentine was a casualty of timing? Maybe it can be seen as a fun Scream clone from the simpler days of times past? What do you think? Watch the video above and leave a comment below!
