Vacation screenwriters in talks to pen script for Spider-Man reboot

At this point we know that Tom Holland (THE IMPOSSIBLE) will be our new web-slinger and that COP CAR director John Watts will be taking the helm of SPIDER-MAN, but who will Marvel/Sony get to write the re-re-introduction to the iconic character? Deadline reports that John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein, writers and directors of the upcoming VACATION reboot, are in talks to pen the script which will bring Spidey into the Marvel Cinematic Universe.

John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein were previously on the SPIDER-MAN director's short-list, but despite not getting that gig Marvel obviously thought highly enough of the pair to offer them another job on the film. The duo's previous script work includes HORRIBLE BOSSES 2, THE INCREDIBLE BURT WONDERSTONE, and CLOUDY WITH A CHANCE OF MEATBALLS 2. Not exactly the resume which would lead me to say "get them on Spider-Man right this instant!" but I suppose Marvel and Sony know what they're doing.

We don't know much about what kind of film SPIDER-MAN will be, but Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige recently commented that they were using John Hughes' films as a big inspiration for the tone of the new SPIDER-MAN:

It’s the soap opera in high school, and those supporting characters, that are interesting. Just as we hadn’t seen a heist movie in a long time, or a shrinking movie in a long time, we haven’t seen a John Hughes movie in a long time. Not that we can make a John Hughes movie – only John Hughes could – but we’re inspired by him, and merging that with the superhero genre in a way we haven’t done before excites us…Particularly at that age, in high school, everything feels like life or death. The tests feel like life or death. Coming home from being out with your friends seemed like life or death.

SPIDER-MAN is set for a July 28, 2017 release but the character should make his first appearance in CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR on May 6, 2016.
