UPDATE: Sorry for the false alarm here, folks. After this article was published, Skreeonk announced that the image below turned out to be fan art that somehow got picked up by the Japanese media, where it was presented as being the real deal. We are getting a Godzilla anime this year, but the image below is not what Godzilla will look like in it. We don't have to wonder if the anime features a Ghost Godzilla after all.
The original article:
Godzilla is one busy monster these days. After a decade of franchise dormancy, the king of the monsters made his return to the big screen in the 2014 Warner Bros. release GODZILLA. Then, rather than wait for the Warner Bros. series to run its course, Toho Studios, the Japanese studio Godzilla has called home since 1954, made their own new Godzilla movie – last year's SHIN GODZILLA.
While Warner Bros. aims at getting another Godzilla movie into production and is planning to make a GODZILLA / KONG: SKULL ISLAND crossover after that, Toho is also making another Godzilla movie of their own. This one, as announced last summer, is an anime.
Toho is teaming with Polygon Pictures for the anime, which is simply going under the title GODZILLA for the moment and is being directed by Kobun Shizuno and Hiroyuki Seshita from a script by Gen Urobuchi.
Details on the story are being kept under wraps, but one very important thing about the anime has just been revealed: the look of Godzilla himself. Skreeonk got the first look at anime Godzilla in an image that can be seen below. As you can see, there is some kind of light glowing in Godzilla's chest, but Skreeonk isn't sure if Godzilla is glowing or if he's actually a ghostly apparition in this film and we're seeing through him – that the light is actually the sun in the sky behind him.
It's certainly an intriguing first look to get. Now we can only wait to find out more about the anime so we can figure out whether or not this Godzilla is a Ghost Godzilla.
This isn't the first time we've had the possibility of a Ghost Godzilla in front of us. Toho had considered making a film called GODZILLA VS. GHOST GODZILLA in 1995, pitting the then-current version of Godzilla against the spirit of the Godzilla that was killed in the original movie in 1954. That idea was scrapped, but we might be getting a ghost monster in this franchise after all.
The GODZILLA anime is expected to be released sometime in 2017, so it shouldn't be much longer before we have more information.
