You know, I actually liked the 2016 GHOSTBUSTERS remake. So I was disappointed when I found out that Sony wouldn't be pursuing a sequel and instead would producing an animated feature instead. While they've stated that a sequel is on the table, at this point it seems unlikely.
So, if that's the case, what's the animated film going to be about anyway? Besides hoping to evoke the feel of the 80s/90s REAL GHOSTBUSTERS Saturday morning cartoon series, the plot reportedly will be from the point-of-view of the ghosts and not the titular Ghostbusters themselves (and still no word on if it will be the original team or not). Which…is interesting, at least. I gotta give 'em that.
To be honest, though, I don't know how I feel about this. On the one hand, it is at least a different approach, and does look at things from another angle. So it's pretty original, for something being based on a popular IP. On the other hand, do we really want to see a movie where the Ghostbusters are the ostensible bad guys? Not saying it can't be good, but I can't help but imagine Ian Malcolm from JURASSIC PARK chiding Sony execs, "you were so concerned if you could, you never stopped to consider if you should".
And who knows, maybe if busting feels good, getting busted does too? I mean, not all ghosts can be bad. Slimer seemed alright.
Meanwhile, UNTITLED ANIMATED GHOSTBUSTERS MOVIE is expected to arrive to theaters in 2019.
