A few years back THE DA VINCI CODE opened up the Cannes Film Festival and many thought its sequel/prequel thingy ANGELS AND DEMONS would do the same this year. Nope. That honor will instead go to Pixar’s first 3D film UP. It was announced this morning that UP will serve as the Opening Ceremony film of the 62nd Cannes Film Festival on Wednesday May 13th, 2009. While numerous DreamWorks films have been distinguished as an Official Selection (including last year’s KUNG FU PANDA and the first two SHREK films), this will be the first Disney animated film since DUMBO. It does however mark the first time that an animated film will be the Opening Selection (and the first for a 3D movie as well). This year’s Cannes Film Festival runs from May 13th to May 24th and UP is the first movie to be officially announced for the Fest. UP hits theaters in the US on May 29th.
