As a kid, I remember being mesmerized by Unsolved Mysteries. Robert Stack was such an amazing voice and presence, narrating us through all manner of unsolved crimes, paranormal events, missing persons cases, etc. There's something that just haunted you about that show in the best possible way, which ran for 500 episodes over the course of its on/off again run since 1987. Now, Netflix and EP Shawn Levy (Stranger Things) have renewed the lease on the show, bringing it over to the streaming service for an all-new 12 part series that will explore a different mystery per episode.
Per Deadline:
"The 12-part show will use re-enactments in a documentary format to profile real-life mysteries and unsolved crimes, lost love, cases involving missing persons and unexplained paranormal events. Each episode will focus on one mystery. In the original series, actors played the victims, criminals and witnesses but family members and police were regularly interviewed."
No word on who will host, but I'd argue that aspect is one of the most important, given the gravitas that Stack offered for his run on the show (he died in 2003). There are tons of talented actors/hosts that could pull off the gig, so here's hoping they find someone that measures up. It's an exciting prospect if they can recapture the allure and mystery of the original series, which stands as some of the most captivating TV from my childhood. With true crime shows being all the rage these days, it feels fitting that Unsolved Mysteries would get the opportunity to play in the game again, having been one of the first shows to start that trend and do it so well.
No word on when this would debut, but stay tuned here for future updates.
