According to a new report from Deadline, Universal Pictures was working in the lab one night, when they hatched a plan for an eerie sight. I hope that you've all got your dancing shoes on, because the studio that brought us such classic frights as DRACULA, FRANKENSTEIN, and THE WOLFMAN are making preparations for MONSTER MASH, an original musical film that promises to be a graveyard smash!
Set to direct the monster-populated project is Matt Stawski, with Will Widger penning the script. Plot details related to the film are being kept six feet under at the moment, though we do know that Stawski is in charge of helming the film as a part of his directorial debut. Who is Stawski, you ask? Why he's a Grammy nominated music video director who shot Side Effects for Awesomeness TV. As for Widger, he had worked on DAMNED for Legendary as well as MAGIC THE GATHERING and LUMBERJANES, both of which fall under the Fox umbrella.
Temple Hill Entertainment's Marty Bowen will produce, with John Fisher heading up the project, also for Temple Hill.
While details are scarce at this time, one can imagine that the project will involve a host of classic monsters beloging to Universal's time-honored label cutting a rug for the big screen. How Stawski plans to develop the premise into a full-length feature film is anyone's guess, though if ROCKY HORROR PICTURE SHOW has taught me anything, it's that a musical featuring misfits and monsters can really make the scene.
