Universal movies could stream on Peacock 45 days after theatrical release

When COVID-19 first began spreading and theaters were forced to close across the globe, studios had to adapt. One way studios were able to release their movies was via streaming services or PVOD, and one by one, we’ve seen studios make deals with theater chains to shorten the theatrical window so that movies can be made available on their streaming services even earlier. It’s been a big boon to those streaming services, with Disney, Warner Bros., Paramount, and more adapting a 45-day window, and Universal has announced that they’ll be following suit by releasing many of their films on Peacock as early as 45-days after theatrical release.

As we continue investing in the most valued and sought-after content for Peacock, films are essential to that mix,” Peacock president Kelly Campbell said. “The team at Universal Filmed Entertainment Group are fantastic partners and we are excited to bring their amazing slate of blockbuster films and beloved franchises to Peacock as early as 45 days after their theatrical release, and provide a steady stream of fresh, original films exclusively for Peacock customers throughout the year.” Not every Universal movie will be available on Peacock after 45 days, with Jurassic World: Dominion, Minions: Rise of Gru, and Christopher Nolan’s Oppenheimer movie all expected to have regular theatrical windows. That’s not to say they won’t mind up on Peacock eventually, just not as soon as the others.

Some of the Universal movies that will be making the leap to Peacock after the 45-day theatrical window include The 355, a spy thriller starring Jessica Chastain; Ticket to Paradise, a romantic comedy starring George Clooney and Julia Roberts; The Black Phone, a horror-thriller starring Ethan Hawke; Marry Me, a romantic comedy starring Jennifer Lopez and Owen Wilson; Downton Abbey: A New Era, the latest sequel to the popular British TV series; Ambulance, an action-thriller directed by Michael Bay, and more.
