It’s been said that in space no one can hear you scream – and being underwater is basically just a wetter version of being in space – so it’s safe to say the same rules apply. That’s unfortunate for characters played by Kristen Stewart, T.J. Miller, Vincent Cassel and more in the new movie UNDERWATER, as they’re trapped miles and miles below the ocean surface, and the first trailer proves that’s even more terrifying than it sounds.

Directed by William Eubank (THE SIGNAL), written by Brian Duffield (THE BABYSITTER) and Adam Cozad (THE LEGEND OF TARZAN), and also starring John Gallagher Jr. (10 CLOVERFIELD LANE), Jessica Henwick (IRON FIST), Mamoudou Athie (THE FRONT RUNNER) and Gunner Wright (J. EDGAR), the trailer starts off like a typical disaster thriller, wherein the safety of the underwater vessel is compromised and the crew has to find a way out. But all too soon things get bonkers, as what looks like sea demons start terrorizing the crew as they try to make it to safety, seven miles deep into the ocean.

The trailer itself is a little sloppy, throwing a lot of information and jump scares at the screen and not drawing out what could be some claustrophobic, quiet suspense. So on that note, it's hard to know what to expect from this movie and to grasp what it's going for, whether it be tense, taut suspense or an unending sea of jump scares. Either way, Stewart is rocking the bleach-blonde short cut and there are some people who may like to see Miller get ripped apart by sea demons, so this could be a fun way to celebrate the start of the new decade.
UNDERWATER is in theaters on January 10, 2020.
