IT FOLLOWS director David Robert Mitchell’s neo-noir comedy thriller UNDER THE SILVER LAKE starring Andrew Garfield and Riley Keough has been delayed time and time again over the past year or so. First, the movie was initially set for a June 2018 release but was then moved back to December 2018 following a mixed critical reception at the Cannes Film Festival. Finally, the movie landed an April 19, 2019 release date.
And today we have word that the film will basically be getting dumped on VOD later this month. The plan is for the film to open in theaters in a limited release in Los Angeles and New York on April 19. From there, it will be released on Amazon, Google Play, iTunes, Fandango Now and Vudu days after.
This update is too bad considering this film was something I was looking forward to checking out. If only to see if Mitchell was a one hit wonder or not. Guess this release is kind of an answer to that question… But considering this film's not straight horror I'll await his next fright flick to pass judgment.
UNDER THE SILVER LAKE tells the story of
Sam (Garfield), a disenchanted 33-year-old who discovers a mysterious woman, Sarah (Keough), frolicking in his apartment’s swimming pool. When she vanishes, Sam embarks on a surreal quest across Los Angeles to decode the secret behind her disappearance, leading him into the murkiest depths of mystery, scandal, and conspiracy in the City of Angels.
The film, which also stars Topher Grace, Jimmi Simpson, Callie Hernandez, and Riki Lindhome, will open in a limited release in Los Angeles and New York on April 19. Then Amazon plans to release the film on April 22 with Google Play, iTunes, Fandango Now and Vudu releasing it on April 23.
