If you’ve been missing your True Detective fix, then FX’s latest crime series might just be what the criminologist ordered. The network has released the first teaser for Under the Banner of Heaven, a crime drama mini-series that stars Andrew Garfield as a Mormon police detective whose faith is shaken while investigating the murder of a woman who seems to be involved in the Church.
Inspired by the true-crime bestseller by Jon Krakauer, Under the Banner of Heaven has been written by Dustin Lance Black (Milk) and directed by David MacKenzie (Hell or High Water). Andrew Garfield stars as Pyre, an LDS elder who is committed to his Church and family but who begins to question some of the Church’s teachings through his contact with a suspected murderer. The brutal murder also seems to be connected to an esteemed Utah family’s spiral into LDS fundamentalism and their distrust in the government.
In addition to Andrew Garfield, Under the Banner of Heaven also stars Daisy Edgar-Jones, Sam Worthington, Wyatt Russell, Adelaide Clemens, Rory Culkin, and Christopher Heyerdahl. The teaser doesn’t give us a lot to go on, but Under the Banner of Heaven looks like it could be an impressive series. Under the Banner of Heaven doesn’t have an official release date yet, but will debut exclusively on Hulu later this year. Will you be watching?
