Umma: Sam Raimi, Andre Ovredal-produced horror movie coming in March

You’d think a horror movie that stars Sandra Oh (Killing Eve) and was produced by Sam Raimi (The Evil Dead), with Andre Ovredal (Scary Stories to Tell in the Dark) serving as executive producer, would get a substantial marketing push… but the higher-ups at Sony / Stage 6 don’t seem to have much interest in this movie called Umma. Deadline reports that Umma will be receiving a theatrical release on March 18th, but we’ve yet to see it be marketed in any way. A trailer should be arriving soon. It really should have been released already to let people know this movie is coming.

The feature writing and directing debut of Iris K. Shim, Umma (which is the Korean word for “mother”) follows

Amanda and her daughter living a quiet life on an American farm. But when the remains of her estranged mother arrive from Korea, Amanda becomes haunted by the fear of turning into her own mother.

Oh plays Amanda, with Fivel Stewart (Atypical) as her daughter. Also in the cast are Dermot Mulroney (Young Guns), Odeya Rush (Lady Bird), MeeWha Alana Lee (Equal Standard), and Tom Yi (The Purge).

Raimi produced Umma with Zainab Azizi. Ovredal’s fellow executive producers include Matt Black, Marcei A. Brown, Peter Luo, James Moran, Jeanette Volturno, and Oh.

I watch anything Raimi puts his name on, so I’ll be checking out Umma at some point, even if Sony / Stage 6 don’t appear to have faith in its box office draw. Sony has also moved the Raimi-produced film 65, a sci-fi thriller written and directed by A Quiet Place writers Scott Beck and Bryan Wood, from an April 29, 2022 release to April 14, 2023 – which puts it in competition with the Universal Pictures movie About Renfield. 65 stars Adam Driver, Ariana Greenblatt, and Chloe Coleman.
