Threatening-to-retire director Steven Soderbergh‘s latest film, SIDE EFFECTS, starring Rooney Mara, Channing Tatum, Jude Law, and Catherine Zeta-Jones didn’t do much for me on the first trailer. I know it’s cliche to liken a film to looking like a made-for-cable movie, so you can just go ahead and throw this one on that fire for me (which is ironic, considering that Soderbergh’s next film IS actually made-for-cable). Until now. I’m not saying that this trailer changed my life or anything, but it does add a layer of depth that the original U.S. trailer left out. Of course, you could also liken that to giving away the whole damn plot, so there’s that. Still, my interest wasn’t even at Netflix level before. Now, I’d at least put it in my queue.
The script is from Scott Z. Burns, frequent collaborator of Soderbergh’s (they did THE INFORMANT! and CONTAGION together), who is currently penning the DAWN OF THE PLANET OF THE APES script. The new UK trailer for SIDE EFFECTS highlights some of the more intricate story threads from Burns, which appears to set up star Rooney Mara as a compelling, manipulative, and diabolical femme fatale, much like some of my ex-girlfriends. I loved Mara in THE GIRL WITH THE DRAGON TATTOO and am hopeful that she can slide into some roles as meaty as Lisbeth Salander. Could SIDE EFFECTS be one?

SIDE EFFECTS is set to open on February 8, 2013.
