Tyler Hoechlin’s Superman will return to Supergirl for more team-up action

Oh man! I can almost hear Superman's cape, snapping in the wind as he rushes to aid his cousin Kara in the self-appointed task of keeping National City safe from harm. That's right, kids, E! News has revealed that Tyler Hoechlin's Superman is returning to SUPERGIRL for its season two finale! As of the moment, there are no story details relating to Superman's surprise (and now much-anticipated) return to the light-hearted but still quite badass CW program. As the former reviewer of SUPERGIRL here at JoBlo, I have more than a few thoughts on this development. 

First, this is fantastic news. Not only do I feel that Hoechlin's Superman is the best representation we've seen of the character since Christopher Reeve played the Man of Steel back in the late 70s and all through the 80s, his on-screen chemistry with The CW's Melissa Benoist is the stuff that comic book dreams are made of. Whoa, whoa! I can hear you grumbling all the way from my office in Canada. Of course I enjoyed Tom Welling's Clark Kent on Smallville! I would never take that away from him. I just happen to think that, as Superman, Hoechlin embodies the character much more. 

With so many loose ends splayed out for the remaining episodes of SUPERGIRL's second season, I've no idea what these two will find themselves up against when push comes to shove in the show's final moments. Will the CW's bravest of the bold go up against Lillian Luthor and her Cadmus goons? Will Mon-El's mother make trouble for our familial caped crusaders? Will an entirely new villain enter the fray and make matters even worse for our heroes? One thing is for damn certain, I can't wait to find out!

In talking about Hoechlin's return, executive producer Andrew Kreisberg said, "We're thrilled to be working with Tyler. We just selfishly hope we get to do it again because it really added to the show in a way. We were very cognizant of not wanting him to come in and steal her thunder, so this Superman that we designed was something that you really haven't seen too much of. Usually, when you see Superman, even when it's in the Christopher Reeve movie or Man of Steel or Lois & Clark, he's just starting out and we wanted to show Superman who's been doing this for a decade and has gotten really, really good at it.

He was really coming in as a supporting character for Kara, to be a friend and a cousin and a mentor," he continued. "We simultaneously wanted to have a Superman who was relatable and fun and sort of everything that you remember about Superman from your childhood that was great, while also, at the same time, de-mystifying him a little bit."

Damn right, Andrew. I also agree that one of the best aspects of having Superman join the show was that he worked beside Kara, and never once overshadowed her during his time on the show. That was my biggest fear when it was announced that he'd be joining the show, that he would steal it. Not only did this not happen, but fans like me were treated to a superb version of Superman that's straight out of the comics while still appearing fresh and exciting to watch.
