For eight seasons on The WB, a trio of witches who also happened to be sisters battled the forces of evil on the television series Charmed. At first, these sisters were Prue, Piper, and Phoebe, played by Shannen Doherty, Holly Marie Combs, and Alyssa Milano, then when Doherty left the show after season three Rose McGowan showed up as a long-lost half sister named Paige.
Now The WB successor The CW is rebooting Charmed, having ordered a pilot from Jane the Virgin creator Jennie Snyder Urman, who came up with the story, and Jane writers Jessica O'Toole and Amy Rardin, who have written the script and will be executive producing the show with director Brad Silberling.
Set in the present day (the original plan had been to set it in the 1970s), this is being described as a
fierce, funny, feminist reboot of the original series, centering on three sisters in a college town who discover they are witches. Between vanquishing supernatural demons, tearing down the patriarchy, and maintaining familial bonds, a witch’s work is never done."
With a new show comes the need to cast a new trio of sisters, and that process is now 2/3 complete.
Melonie Diaz (pictured above) has signed on to play Mel, "a passionate, outspoken activist who loses her way in the wake of family tragedy." Sarah Jeffery (below) will be playing the youngest sister, Madison, "a bubbly college freshman who finds witchcraft at odds with her goal of getting into a super-fun sorority."
The role of the third sister, Macy, is still open, but Ser'Darius Blain is already set to play her boyfriend Galvin, "the ideal boyfriend — funny, mellow, in touch with his emotions, totally on board to follow his lady across the country for her dream job. An aspiring filmmaker, he has yet to catch the break he’s sure is just around the corner."
Blain can be seen in JUMANJI: WELCOME TO THE JUNGLE, while Diaz had a part in last year's THE BELKO EXPERIMENT. Jeffery has been co-starring with Jennifer Lopez in the NBC series Shades of Blue, and will still be able to make guest appearances on that show if it continues. She was also recently cast to play Scooby Doo character Daphne in the live action origin story DAPHNE AND VELMA.
