January is typically a "dead" month for movies, but there's at least one film that looks pretty enticing: JACK RYAN: SHADOW RECRUIT. Directed by Kenneth Branagh (who also stars as the film's villain), the film is based on characters created by the late author Tom Clancy, but the first time they've adapted them without using an actual novel for the source material. Starring Chris Pine, Kevin Costner, and Keira Knightley, the spy thriller has two new character featurettes and a clip, which shows the first meeting of Pine's Jack Ryan and Branagh's Russian villain, Viktor Cherevin.

Synopsis:
Jack Ryan, as a young covert CIA analyst, uncovers a Russian plot to crash the U.S. economy with a terrorist attack.
Strangely, I'm mostly intrigued by this project for the film's older stars, that being Kevin Costner and Kenneth Branagh. Both are not only seasoned actors, but seasoned filmmakers as well, so I'm interested to see how they tackle this project, which is a pretty standard spy thriller by all accounts. My feeling is that these two will add some gravitas to what looks like a "Bourne" film, which isn't necessarily a bad thing.
JACK RYAN: SHADOW RECRUIT opens on January 17, 2014.
