It has probably been about twenty years since the last time I played a Twisted Metal video game, but I had a lot of fun playing the early installments in the series back in the day. There has been a lot of talk about some kind of Twisted Metal adaptation over the years, and now Sony Pictures Television and PlayStation Productions have officially announced that they're developing a live-action television series based on the games.
The action-comedy show will follow
a motor-mouthed outsider who is offered a chance at a better life, but only if he can successfully deliver a mysterious package across a post-apocalyptic wasteland. With the help of a trigger-happy car thief, he’ll face savage marauders driving vehicles of destruction and other dangers of the open road, including a deranged clown who drives an all too familiar ice cream truck, whom fans of the game will know as Sweet Tooth.
The series is based on an original take by Zombieland and Deadpool writers Rhett Reese and Paul Wernick. Michael Jonathan Smith, who recently worked in the Cobra Kai writers' room, will write and executive produce the series. Reese and Wernick will also executive produce, along with Marc Forman and Peter Principato of Artists First, Asad Qizilbash and Carter Swan of PlayStation Productions, Hermen Hulst of PlayStation Studios, and actor Will Arnett, through his production company Electric Avenue.
There has been speculation that Arnett could be providing the voice of Sweet Tooth as well, but Variety was informed that there is no deal in place for him to do that. Which doesn't mean that it won't happen eventually…
Qizilbash said,
Twisted Metal is one of the most beloved franchises from PlayStation. We are thrilled to have such a great team working on bringing this iconic game to life for the fans."
Here's hoping that the show will be as fun to watch as the games were to play.
