Twin Peaks co-creator says Season Three has been pushed to 2017

Between the announcement that Showtime would resurrect Twin Peaks for a third season followed by creator David Lynch declaring the project dead and then coming back, it is only natural to be skeptical about whether the new series will even happen. Everything appeared to be in order for the newly expanded run of 18 episodes to premiere next year but now that may not be the case.

Speaking at the Baseball Hall of Fame, Twin Peaks co-creator Mark Frost offered this update on the new season of the show.

“We had 32 hours back in 1991-92, and with my partner David Lynch we kind of blew open that genre of the nighttime soap and took it in a whole other direction,” Frost said. “A lot of people always look back at Twin Peaks and say that was the start of this explosion we’ve had in good television drama, but we did it in a time when there were still only three networks. The challenge for us is to try and come back and raise the bar above what we did the last time. We’re coming back with season three of Twin Peaks after a 25-year absence. We’ve finished the scripts, we start production in September, and that will be coming out on Showtime sometime in 2017.”

It seems odd for a series to go into production in 2015 before waiting a full year to debut episodes on television, but stranger things have happened. David Lynch is not exactly the most conventional filmmaker and he may be planning some sort of elaborate production process for the new show. Still, waiting a full year? It could be that Frost misspoke and meant to say 2016, but you never know.

Twin Peaks was a unique series that has never quite been replicated on the small screen. Shows like The X-Files have come close, but even that series never attained the same level of weirdness that Lynch's series did.

Unless an official statement comes out from Lynch, Frost, or Showtime backtracking on this quote, don't expect any damn fine cups of coffee until 2017.
