EPISODE 16: Last Day on Earth
THE HOOK: Rick and his crew are herded into a trap as they desperately race for Hilltop to save Maggie and her baby.
The following contains MAJOR SPOILERS, so I don’t recommend reading this if you haven’t watched this episode
THE LOWDOWN: Well…that was f*cking disappointing. Clearly, with all the hype surrounding this episode, I figured there was no way in hell it could live up to it. And hell, I REALLY wanted to love this episode (yes, I’ll still give it a good-ish rating due to Jeffrey Dean Morgan), but for a ninety minute finale, I have to say, color me unimpressed.
First off, I hoped they would leave the Carol and Morgan situation until next season. What a drawn out waste of time that was. I loved the homage to the first episode with Morgan on a horse (though I do question his reasoning for being so…inconspicuous), but what a bland turn of events. He finds Carol, patches her up, she’s angry and wants him to go…zzz, oh, there’s more? And what was with this going out to kill the hangman walker? Seriously Morgan, did you really think she wouldn’t run off? Here’s the real fun of it all, Carol had a huge head start on everyone, Morgan was on horseback, and the half dead dude still managed to catch up and find them at an opportune moment. (Clapping), good job guy. All for what, more horsemen to show up and rescue them. Glad that took up a half hour to forty-five minutes.
Speaking of timewasters, what the hell is up with the dumbass storyline of driving around all episode in an attempt to get Maggie help, only to be road blocked at every turn?! I’m sorry, but that’s just a stupid, stupid, stupid turn of events. You’d think that after the first or second one, how nonchalant these guys were acting, Rick would realize there was something HUGE brewing and chances are, they’re being herded into a trap. I mean, hell, he even says it at one point ‘we’re going exactly where they want us to’. Yes Rick, clearly you are, so why the hell are you playing into it like a fool? These guys have extreme numbers, aren’t worried about you guys at all (hence they haven’t clocked you all full of holes), so they’re obviously watching you’re every move, but hey, a last minute trek through the woods will work, right? Sigh.
THE WALKING DEAD SEASON 6’s finale was absolute bullshit until the last fifteen minutes, something I suppose we should have all seen coming a mile away. What was the one thing we wanted to know all episode? What happened to Daryl and them, are they okay? And what do we get? These guys are shoehorned into the final moments with Rick and the gang after they waltz into Negan’s trap. Literally, Daryl, Glenn and Rosita and just thrown out into the group. Now again, you might look at the rating (something that some of you have mentioned in the past, yes, I give a lot of 8/10s, with the occasional 7, 9 or 10. There’s a reason for that, whether I like the decisions that get made or not, as a fan, I still appreciate the monumental effort being put forth by all people involved with this show) and think, damn bro, it sounded like you hated this episode. But hey, I loved Negan’s entrance. Jeffrey Dean Morgan was on fire as Negan, I could go on about it, but you saw it for yourselves. What I will say is, not showing us who died is an asinine f*cking cop-out. Seriously guys, what a dick move. It’s going to be a long wait for answers folks, so strap in, and prepare for the onslaught of internet conspiracy theories.
ZOMBIE KILL OF THE WEEK: Carl lopping off the branch walker’s head. Who needs two eyes anyway?
BLOOD AND GORE: Not nearly as much as I hoped we’d see. Some walker stuff, gunshots and some head slicing. Seriously though, if we don’t actually ‘see’ what Negan did in the season seven premiere I’m going to be pissed.
COOLEST SCENE: Negan’s entire entrance speech, but more specifically, how mind-numbingly horrified Rick looked as it became clear what was going to happen.
