EPISODE 14: Twice as Far

THE HOOK: A medical run creates a tough situation for Daryl, Rosita and Denise.

The following contains MAJOR SPOILERS, so I don’t recommend reading this if you haven’t watched this episode

THE LOWDOWN: There are always at least a couple episodes a season that really piss me off, and tonight is one of them. Don’t get me wrong, I enjoyed it, but sometimes it’s hard to get behind extremely dumb decisions. I liked the whole ‘calm before the storm’ opening, it’s incredibly ominous in the best kind of way, but is it me, or was everyone in a bad mood tonight? Eugene and Abraham were bickering over nothing, and Denise pairing with Daryl and Rosita felt like the supply run from hell (which it totally was). There are a million reasons NOT to bring Denise on a run, but I’ll cut the list short and give you the two most important ones; one, she’s the damn doctor, I mean, what the hell guys? And two, with all the heavy shit going on, there’s absolutely no excuse for letting anyone leave Alexandria if they can’t handle themselves. Dumb as hell right from the start.

Honestly, I didn’t think Denise would die (if anything, I figured Eugene was toast the second he said he could make bullets). I knew something would happen, beyond finding the walker and (what looked like) a dead kid in the sink—that would be enough to jar just about anyone. The whole car thing was ridiculous, but I had a feeling it would play out just like it did. That said, I didn’t like all the yelling they were doing, but the arrow through the eye took me off guard. It was definitely a WTF moment. At the end of the day there’s still the doctor at Hilltop, but it’s a shame we had to lose Denise. She had a great moment with Daryl and Rosita, so I guess there’s that, but I don’t think Tara’s going to be very impressed.

Daryl’s had a lot on his mind lately, and opening up with Carol about how he should have killed Dwight and the girls rather than save them didn’t come as much of a surprise to me. I knew he’d run into Dwight again, I just didn’t think it would happen tonight. The look of sheer rage in Daryl’s eyes when he realizes not only was it Dwight’s arrow, but that it came from his own crossbow, was a hell of an adrenaline rush. The numbers were in Dwight’s favor, but there was Abraham ready to save the day. That battle felt a little rushed to me, and I hated that Daryl didn’t get his revenge (got his crossbow back though). That battle is coming, I hope, but at the very least, Dwight better cool it on the liquids because his next bathroom break won’t be pretty.

THE WALKING DEAD SEASON 6’s fourteenth episode was interesting, but full of moments that made me shake my head. None more so than Carol’s sudden departure. What in the name of God is she thinking? I get it, she’s having a crisis of conscience (a little late in the game mind you), but what good is being on her own going to accomplish? At this point, self-reflection isn’t a terrible idea, but in the apocalypse you are who/what you are. In Carol’s case, she’s a true survivor. She lost a daughter and husband, but she came back from it. She learned to fight, she’s respected and she knows what the hell she’s doing. Going it alone won’t change a damn thing, and she has to know that. Morgan seems upset, and he should be, considering this is primarily his fault for putting doubts in her head. So, by the look of things, people are going to search for her, probably find her, and then get captured by Negan, thus setting up the finale. Two more episodes folks, let’s hope they’re worthy of all this hype.

ZOMBIE KILL OF THE WEEK: We all know I have to give it to Denise, but that metal head walker was pretty damn cool.

BLOOD AND GORE: There’s some sweet walker gore tonight (as well as some disturbing stuff too), but nothing says ‘ouch’ like an arrow through the damn eye (or a bite on the dick, even if we didn’t see it). RIP Denise.

COOLEST SCENE: Abraham congratulating Eugene on his dick biting skills. Pure win.
