If March comes in like a lion, it had better be willing to share the spotlight with another species because Disney and Pixar’s Turning Red is coming exclusively to Disney+ on March 11, 2022. The plan to host Turning Red on Disney+ comes after subscribers to the streaming service embraced Pixar’s Soul and the critically-acclaimed Luca. The new Turning Red premiere plan is likely to be music to the ears of animation fans, especially those who live in areas where Covid is still running rampant.
“Given the delayed box office recovery, particularly for family films, flexibility remains at the core of our distribution decisions as we prioritize delivering the unparalleled content of The Walt Disney Company to audiences around the world,” said Kareem Daniel, Chairman, Disney Media & Entertainment Distribution.
Disney and Pixar’s Turning Red introduces Mei Lee (voice of Rosalie Chiang), a confident, dorky 13-year-old torn between staying her mother’s dutiful daughter and the chaos of adolescence. Her protective, if not slightly overbearing mother, Ming (voice of Sandra Oh), is never far from her daughter—an unfortunate reality for the teenager. And as if changes to her interests, relationships, and body weren’t enough, whenever she gets too excited (which is practically ALWAYS), she “poofs” into a giant red panda! Directed by Academy Award winner Domee Shi (Pixar short Bao) and produced by Lindsey Collins.
While filmmakers often dream about their projects appearing on the silver screen, Disney+ has proven itself to be a great alternative to bringing some of the studio’s biggest films to the homes of families across the globe. While I imagine that some of the film’s creators won’t be too enthusiastic about Disney’s Turning Red premiere happening exclusively on the streaming platform, it certainly is the safer way to expose audiences of all ages to this adorable-looking adventure.
