As a thin, pale, nerd I often get mocked when someone finds me listening to rap music, so I’m glad I can take refuge behind rap biopics. I can watch them and be absorbed in the music as well as the real-life stories of the artists without worrying about being ridiculed. That’s why I got a little giddy when I saw the new trailer for the film ALL EYEZ ON ME, which focuses on the man many consider the greatest rapper of all time, Tupac.
Watch below!
The movie seems to be focusing more on the social turmoil around the time Tupac was hitting it big, and the pressure he felt to be the voice of a generation, and even the reluctance from the man to take up such a mantle. Actor Demetrius Shipp Jr. was clearly hired (among many other reasons, I’m sure) because of his uncanny resemblance to the rapper. As well, Jamal Woolard is reprising his role of Biggie Smalls from when he played the rapper in 2009’s NOTORIOUS. The trailer has a nice, ominous beat to it, but the clips themselves move at such a fast pace it doesn’t exactly mesh well with the music. Maybe something at a slower pace would enhance the emotional weight. Still, the grit seems there, and I can't wait to see how it turns out. Until then, I will continue to listen to rap music at a low volume when I drive around town.
ALL EYEZ ON ME starring Demetrius Shipp Jr., Jamal Woolard and Danai Gurira will probably be out sometime in 2017.
