True Detective season 4 in development with Barry Jenkins and Issa López

It’s been three years since the last season of True Detective but HBO’s wonderful crime anthology series is set to return. However, it doesn’t look like original creator Nic Pizzolatto will be back as the network has tapped Issa López (Tigers Are Not Afraid) with writing the script for True Detective season 4 with Barry Jenkins (Moonlight) onboard to executive produce.

The new season is tentatively titled True Detective: Night Country, but that’s about all we know at the moment. In addition to writing True Detective season 4, Issa López would also direct the pilot and serve as an executive producer alongside Barry Jenkins should the new season move forward. Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson are also expected to return as executive producers as will Nic Pizzolatto, although he’s not expected to be creatively involved.

Nic Pizzolatto and HBO partied ways after the third season of the series but HBO kept the door open to bring it back with a new creative team. HBO’s Casey Bloys hinted at a fourth season of the anthology series earlier this year. “It’s safe to say we’re working with a couple of writers to find the right tone and take,” Bloys said. “It’s definitely an area that could be very interesting and I think it would be interesting with a new voice. Quality is what’s going to guide us so if we end up with scripts that we don’t feel are representative or are not at a high enough quality, we’re not going to do something just to do it.” The first season of True Detective starred Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson and remains one of the favourite seasons of television. The second season brought Colin Farrell, Rachel McAdams, Taylor Kitsch, Kelly Reilly, and Vince Vaughn onboard but received mixed reviews compared to the first. The third season fared better with a story revolving around Mahershala Ali, Carmen Ejogo, Stephen Dorff, Scoot McNairy, and Ray Fisher.
