True Detective: HBO in talks for possible fourth season

HBO is not ruling out a fourth season of True Detective. It has been announced that the network has been in talks with new writers for a fourth iteration.

Chief Content Officer at HBO and HBO Max, Casey Bloys, spoke with "Deadline" about season four prospects, and Bloys was hopeful that new voices would make a fourth season possible:

"It’s safe to say we’re working with a couple of writers to find the right tone and take. It’s definitely an area that could be very interesting and I think it would be interesting with a new voice. Quality is what’s going to guide us so if we end up with scripts that we don’t feel are representative or are not at a high enough quality, we’re not going to do something just to do it."

True Detective was created and written by Nic Pizzlolatto and is an anthology crime drama that ran from 2014-2019. The first season starred Matthew McConaughey and Woody Harrelson and was well-received by critics and viewers alike. Season 2 starred Colin Farrell, Taylor Kitsch, Rachel McAdams, and Vince Vaughn and even though it was riding on the coattails of the buzzy first season, the reception wasn't nearly as positive. Season 3 starred Mahershala Ali and Stephen Dorff and while it didn't reach the status of season one, it received a better reception than season two.

Pizzolatto previously stated that he had an idea for a fourth season but it never materialized. Pizzolatto moved on to develop Redeemer on FX, which would have reunited him with McConaughey, but the series wasn't picked up and he's not looking to exit an overall deal that he developed with FX Productions and 20th Television. Since they're looking for new writers for a potential fourth season of True Detective, it looks like he won't be involved this time around. "Deadline" speculates that Lucia Puenzo, who co-wrote the Argentinean drama Cromo, and Euphoria creator Sam Levinson, were among those pitching ideas for a new take on the series.
