If Showtime can bring back Dexter for a limited series, HBO should be able to dig into their archives to bring back a critical and fan-favorite as well. "Variety" is reporting that HBO is in the early development stages of a reboot of True Blood.
Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, the mastermind behind Riverdale and Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, is attached to write the script along with Jami O'Brien. They will also executive produce the reboot alongside original series creator and showrunner Alan Ball. Other news on this reboot is pretty scarce at the moment but we will be sure to bring you any and all updates as they come in.
The original series is based on "The Southern Vampire Mysteries" novel series by Charlaine Harris. The show made its debut on September 7, 2008, and ran for seven seasons until 2014. The series revolves around Sookie Stackhouse (Anna Paquin), a telepathic waitress living in the fictional rural town of Bon Temps, Louisiana. It is set two years after the invention of a synthetic blood product branded “Tru Blood” that has allowed vampires to "come out of the coffin" and let their presence be known to mankind. It chronicles the vampires' struggle for equal rights and assimilation while anti-vampire organizations begin to gain power. Sookie's world is turned upside down when she falls in love with 173-year-old vampire Bill Compton (Stephen Moyer), and for the first time, she must navigate the trials and terrors of intimacy and relationships. Comprising of 80 episodes, the first five seasons of the show received highly positive reviews and was also an awards favorite during the early part of its run. Anna Paquin won the Best Performance by an Actress in a Television Series – Drama Golden Globe at the 66th Golden Globe Awards and was also nominated in the same category the next year. The show did take a bit of a dive creatively when Alan Ball departed as showrunner beginning with season six but the series is still a fan favorite and is considered one of the best shows to hit cable TV. Other notable cast members include Sam Trammell, Ryan Kwanten, Rutina Wesley, Chris Bauer, Nelsan Ellis, Alexander Skarsgard, Lizzy Caplan, Stephen Root, Mehcad Brooks, Anna Camp, Deborah Ann Woll, and Joe Manganiello.
