If you're one of the few people who saw the trailer for TROLLS and thought, "I like that!", then we have some good news for you! The Wrap is reporting that TROLLS director Mike Mitchell has signed on to direct THE LEGO MOVIE SEQUEL. For those keeping track, Chris McKay, co-director on the original LEGO MOVIE was set to direct the sequel, but moved to the THE LEGO BATMAN MOVIE instead. As of now, no returning cast members have been announced, but the story has been written by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller with a re-write from Raphael Bob-Waksberg (BoJack Horseman).
To be fair, I haven't seen the TROLLS flick, but it made some decent numbers (over $300 million worldwide). It's worth noting that Mitchell also directed SURVIVING CHRISTMAS, the Ben Affleck and James Gandolfini Christmas vehicle. Simultaneous theater and Blu-ray/DVD release is not that upcoming nowadays, but at the time of that film's release, SURVIVING CHRISTMAS hit DVD a mere 3 weeks later (I was working at a Blockbuster Video at the time). What does that mean for THE LEGO MOVIE SEQUEL? Probably nothing.
THE LEGO MOVIE SEQUEL is scheduled to open sometime in 2019.
