After writing and directing the modern-classic TRICK R TREAT back in 2009, Michael Dougherty became a household name for horror buffs. Now with the announcement that Dougherty will be stepping in to helm the new GODZILLA flick, it is only a matter of time before he is a household name throughout the world.
And rightfully so.
TRICK R TREAT is a masterpiece of Halloween hoopla and his 2015 Christmas-creepfest KRAMPUS showed the man was no one-hit wonder. Tag to that Dougherty helmed both of those projects under Legendary studios, who currently over-see all things Godzilla (and Kong), and it makes 100% sense the producers would go all in with him; he's a sure bet for fun, slick, pure entertainment.
Dougherty is also penning the script, along with his “Krampus” co-writer Zach Shields, so I think it is
safe to say we will soon be seeing Sam (the Trick r Treat mascot) riding through a city in ruins astride the mighty lizard himself. I'm joking. Obviously. But I'd still sacrifice 3 Bryan Cranstons, and 19 Matthew Brodericks, to the old gods for the chance to witness this mash-up.
Dougherty steeping behind the camera for GODZILLA 2 has long been rumored so it's nice to get some official confirmation today. Congrats, Michael, we can't wait to see what you come up with!
Godzilla 2 is currently scheduled for Mar. 22, 2019, and will be followed up by “Godzilla vs. Kong” on May 29, 2020.
