I’m not going to lie: not a huge fan of Westerns. A part of it is that they peaked before my time, but honestly I just don’t like that era. While I enjoy Western inspired things, ala FIREFLY, I can’t really get past a lot of classic Westerns glorification of “Manifest Destiny” and the dehumanization of indigenous people. To be fair, I’ve also liked a lot of anti-Westerns (UNFORGIVEN) and a few fun ones (like TOMBSTONE), but I definitely don’t jump for joy whenever they’re announced.
Having said all that, I am interested in a Steven Soderbergh Western, in the same way the Coen Brothers deciding to remake TRUE GRIT got me excited. And the trailer above for Soderbergh’s upcoming Netflix miniseries GODLESS looks stylish at least, so there’s that. Anyway, here’s the official synopsis:
Frank Griffin, an outlaw terrorizing the 1880s American West, hunts down Roy Goode, his partner turned enemy. Roy hides out at a ranch as Frank’s chase leads him to La Belle, New Mexico – a town mysteriously made up entirely of women.
Meanwhile, you can see GODLESS streaming on Netflix November 22nd.
