So it seems AMC is continuing its trend of shows about powerful, morally ambiguous white dudes. We had MAD MEN, BREAKING BAD, LOW WINTER SUN, HALT AND CATCH FIRE, and now they're going to try again with THE SON starring Pierce Brosnan. Here's the official synopsis:
As a child, Eli McCullough (Pierce Brosnan) was kidnapped and raised among the Comanche Native American tribe and applies the brutal Comanche worldview to his business dealings. He was born on the day Texas became an independent Republic, earning the nickname “First Son of Texas” and is a relic of the Wild West, uneasy with the inexorable taming of Texas and the uncertain future of his legacy.
Meanwhile, AMC has just released a trailer for the new series. Let's just hope this is more like the two former shows, rather than the two latter:
Hmm. Now, don't get me wrong, I love me some Pierce Brosnan. He was my James Bond growing up (mostly due to the N64 GOLDENEYE game, but still), but he's also been great in many other things as well. I particularly enjoyed him in THE MATADOR, but he was also fun in his small role in MARS ATTACKS! and AT WORLD'S END. And while his Southern accent in the trailer was…shaky, I still think he looks fun here. I just think the rest of the show looks, I don't know, kind of cheap? As in, the sets look less like a Western film and more like something you'd see at Knott's Berry Farm where actors have to talk period-appropriate and pretend to be confounded by cell-phones. Though that might just be me.
Either way, I'll still probably at least give the first episode a try. Brosnan's usually reliable (even if the movies he's in usually aren't), and I'd say AMC hits more than it misses. And heck AMC's last Western, HELL ON WHEELS, was mostly good, and very underrated in my opinion. So we'll see.
Either way, THE SON will premiere on AMC sometime in 2017.
