Over the weekend, it was revealed that the British Board of Film Classification had approved a trailer for the next INSIDIOUS sequel, and there was a touch of strangeness to the film’s listing on the BBFC website: it had a different subtitle than we’ve come to expect. We’ve had INSIDIOUS: CHAPTER 2 and INSIDIOUS: CHAPTER 3, establishing that entries in this series were going to be numbered chapters. This new movie was announced as INSIDIOUS: CHAPTER 4, but according to the BBFC site the title was now INSIDIOUS: THE LAST KEY.
The trailer for the new INSIDIOUS has now arrived online, and it confirms – this is not just another CHAPTER.
Directed by Adam Robitel from a screenplay by Leigh Whannell, INSIDIOUS: THE LAST KEY is
set years before the events from the previous films and follows Elise Rainier (Lin Shaye), in her youth in New Mexico, that begins to be haunted by malevolent and demonic spirits in their own house.
Shaye’s co-stars include Angus Sampson, Leigh Whannell, Josh Stewart, Caitlin Gerard, Kirk Acevedo, Javier Botet, Bruce Davison, Spencer Locke, Tessa Ferrer, Ava Kolker, and Marcus Henderson.
Shifting subtitle strategies three sequels in is a bit jarring, but ultimately a title doesn’t mean much (as the FAST & FURIOUS franchise has been proving). What matters is the movie behind the title, and judging by the trailer it looks like Robitel has delivered a solid INSIDIOUS film. Having enjoyed all three previous movies to varying degrees, I’m looking forward to watching Lin Shaye continue to venture into The Further.
INSIDIOUS: THE LAST KEY will be reaching theatres on January 5, 2018.
