After more than twenty years working as a stuntman and stunt coordinator, Ben Hernandez Bray has been getting into directing as well, taking the helm of episodes of multiple TV series, including the DC Comics-inspired shows Arrow, Legends of Tomorrow, and Supergirl. Bray has stayed within the realm of heroes and vigilantes with his feature debut EL CHICANO, and he teamed with Joe Carnahan, one of my favorite filmmakers, to create the titular character.
Bray and Carnahan wrote the EL CHICANO screenplay together, telling the following story:
When LAPD Detective Diego Hernandez is assigned a career-making case investigating a vicious cartel, he uncovers links to his brother’s supposed suicide and a turf battle that’s about to swallow his neighborhood. Torn between playing by the book and seeking justice, he resurrects the masked street legend El Chicano. Now, out to take down his childhood buddy turned gang boss, he sets off a bloody war to defend his city and avenge his brother’s murder.
Said to be the first superhero movie with an all-Hispanic cast, the film stars Raúl Castillo, Aimee Garcia, Jose Pablo Cantillo, David Castañeda, Marco Rodríguez, Sal Lopez, Marlene Forte, Kate del Castillo, and George Lopez.
EL CHICANO will introduce us to the "ghetto Grim Reaper" when it reaches theatres on May 3rd. Check out the trailer below to see if this is a character you'd like to meet.
