I was unaware but evidently, World UFO Day is a thing, and it was celebrated yesterday. Personally, I don't know anyone who celebrated the holiday but it looks like Sony did by releasing the first trailer for the new UFO horror-thriller – cleverly titled UFO – starring Gillian Anderson. You'd think by this point – and especially considering she's done with THE X-FILES – Anderson would want to try her hand at a different subgenre of cinema, but all the same, here she is in the new trailer (which you can see below).
The film has been rated PG-13 via the MPAA for "some drug material and language." Here’s the synopsis:
Derek a brilliant college student, haunted by a childhood UFO sighting, believes that mysterious sightings reported at multiple airports across the United States are UFO’s. With the help of his girlfriend, Natalie, and his advanced mathematics professor, Dr. Hendricks (Anderson), Derek races to unravel the mystery with FBI special agent Franklin Ahls on his heels.
UFO's always make for interesting times at the movies – unless they're called PHOENIX FORGOTTEN – and Anderson adds a bit of class to any flick she chooses to star in, so I'm thinking this could be worth checking out when it hits in September. Especially considering I can only imagine Anderson welcomed this role for the opportunity to finally PLAY an alien… but I could be wrong.
The new UFO thriller is written and directed by Ryan Eslinger and produced by Evan Hayes, Tom Rice, and Jeff Sharp. Executive producers are Siegfried Harris and Dan Kaplow. Along with Anderson, the film co-stars Alex Sharp, Ella Purnell, and David Strathairn. It will be released on DVD and digital platforms on September 4th.
