If you were overwhelmed with excitement after seeing Schwarzenegger’s trailer for THE LAST STAND today, then get ready for the opposite with director Walter Hill’s trailer for BULLET TO THE HEAD. Starring another member of the Planet Hollywood Action Trio (aka PHAT), Sylvester Stallone, the trailer is an exercise in tired action movie cliches and not in the good way.
Lower expectations. Now, hit play:
Seeing this trailer after the one for THE LAST STAND should’ve caused multiple geekgasm’s, instead of letting air out of a balloon. The dialogue and banter between Stallone and co-star Sung Kang almost hurt my ears, as every line was just one tired joke after another. It was better in RED HEAT. Or TANGO AND CASH. Or even JUDGE DREDD for that matter.
I’m disappointed overall, but am still going to hold out hope that the action will outweigh…well, everything else. Walter Hill is one of my favorite action directors and he’s been gone too long. I just hope I don’t feel like he should’ve stayed that way after seeing the final film. Not to end on a downer, let me reiterate that even though this looks like a USA movie of the week, I’m still excited to see these old bastards back on the big screen, for better or for worse. I look forward to seeing what they do for act three of their careers, as I think there’s plenty of life left to bring the goods.
BULLET TO THE HEAD, starring Stallone, Sung Kang, Jason Mamoa, Christian Slater, Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje, and Sarah Shahi, hits theaters on February 1, 2013.
