For years now, we've been getting way more zombie movies than we really need. If you're a filmmaker who wants to make a zombie movie yourself, how do you make your project stand out from the horde of others that will be coming out around the same time? Making it a musical is one way. We don't have too many zombie musicals.
The musical zombie comedy ANNA AND THE APOCALYPSE will be making its world premiere at Fantastic Fest in Austin, Texas later today, and coinciding with its festival debut a trailer for the film has been released online.
Directed by John McPhail, ANNA AND THE APOCALYPSE was written by Alan McDonald and Ryan McHenry, who was best known for the viral hit "Ryan Gosling Won't Eat His Cereal". McHenry had meant to direct the film, but unfortunately passed away from cancer before he had the chance.
Roddy Hart and Tommy Reilly wrote the music and lyrics for the film's songs.
Its synopsis:
A girl and her friends who must fight – and sing – their way through a zombie invasion to reach the supposed safety of their school, not knowing if their parents and friends will still be alive when they get there.
Ella Hunt, Mark Benton, Paul Kaye, Malcolm Cumming, Sarah Swire, Christopher Leveaux, Ben Wiggins, Ella Jarvis, and Marli Siu star.
Going by the trailer, ANNA AND THE APOCALYPSE does look to be quite charming – certain the jolliest zombie project I've seen in some time. Not only is it a comedic musical, it's also a Christmas movie! It seems like it would be fun to watch, so I'm looking forward to hearing the reactions that come out of Fantastic Fest.
