Sibling director duo Luciano and Nicolas Onetti are back to complete the giallo homage trilogy they began with SONNO PROFONDO in 2013 and continued with 2015's FRANCESCA. After taking a break from the giallo style with last year's TEXAS CHAINSAW-esque WHAT THE WATERS LEFT BEHIND, the Onettis are taking giallo trilogy capper ABRAKADABRA to the Sitges Film Festival next month.
The trailer for ABRAKADABRA can be seen below. While "this movie involves a murderer and a magician" may be all you can glean of the story, what this trailer really gets across is how cool the retro style visuals are. Giallos aren't the only thing this brings to mind; it also reminds me of the H.G. Lewis film THE WIZARD OF GORE, and I like the idea of paying tribute to Lewis even better than the idea of paying tribute to giallos.
Scripted by the Onettis and Carlos Goitia, the film has the following synopsis:
"Dante The Great", a prestigious magician, accidentally dies during a risky magic trick. Thirty-five years later his son Lorenzo, also a magician, presents a magic show in one of the most important theaters in the city. From then on, a series of murders will begin to take place and will attempt to incriminate him. Lorenzo must discover who and why seeks to involve him before it is too late…
German Baudino, Maria Eugenia Rigon, Clara Kovacic, Ivi Brickell, Gustavo D'Alessandro, Raul Gerderlini, and Pablo Vilela star.
ABRAKADABRA will be competing in the Panorama Fantastic and Blood Window categories at Sitges. For more information on the film festival, click over to its official site.
