Top Gun: Maverick box-office flies past $900 million worldwide

Last week, the box-office for Top Gun: Maverick reached $800 million worldwide, becoming Tom Cruise’s biggest movie yet. The sequel has reached yet another milestone, now sitting at $901.9 million worldwide, with a domestic total of $474.8 million and an international total of $427.1 million.

This places Top Gun: Maverick as only the third Hollywood movie of the pandemic to cross the $900 million box-office mark, behind only Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness ($943 million) and Spider-Man: No Way Home (1.9 billion). Not bad, Maverick. Not bad at all. Paramount Pictures has said that more than 16% of the audience for Top Gun: Maverick have seen the film more than once in theatres with 4% having seen it four times or more. Will Top Gun: Maverick be able to crack $1 billion? Time will soon tell, but box-office sources tell THR that the only reason it may not happen would be due to the “absence of a China and Russia release.” Audiences have clearly been hungry for a reason to return to theaters, and Top Gun: Maverick is perfect big-screen entertainment.

In addition to the robust box-office, Top Gun: Maverick has earned stellar reviews and is currently sitting at 98% on Rotten Tomatoes. How long before they get the ball rolling on a sequel?

After more than thirty years of service as one of the Navy’s top aviators, Pete “Maverick” Mitchell (Tom Cruise) is where he belongs, pushing the envelope as a courageous test pilot and dodging the advancement in rank that would ground him. When he finds himself training a detachment of TOPGUN graduates for a specialized mission the likes of which no living pilot has ever seen, Maverick encounters Lt. Bradley Bradshaw (Miles Teller), call sign: “Rooster,” the son of Maverick’s late friend and Radar Intercept Officer Lt. Nick Bradshaw, aka “Goose.” Facing an uncertain future and confronting the ghosts of his past, Maverick is drawn into a confrontation with his own deepest fears, culminating in a mission that demands the ultimate sacrifice from those who will be chosen to fly it.
