Couches beware! Tom Cruise might soon jump upon you. What’s the cause for celebration, you ask? The Top Gun box office totals, that’s what! Top Gun: Maverick has become Tom Cruise‘s biggest earner at the worldwide box office, not adjusted for inflation.
After the Thursday box office closed, Paramount and Skydance reported that Maverick had earned $806.3 million in ticket sales. So far, the film has managed to pull in $422.1 million domestically and $384.2 million internationally. With the new total, Maverick has defeated Cruise’s previous box office barn burner, Mission: Impossible – Fallout, which earned $791 million worldwide.
In addition to Cruise’s star power and nostalgia for the original Top Gun, Maverick has received tremendous word of mouth from fans. The Top Gun sequel has a 96 percent score on Rotten Tomatoes and an A+ CinemaScore, making it one of the best-reviewed films of the summer. Analysts predict the Top Gun: Maverick box office earnings could bank more than $900 million before flying out of theaters and onto Paramount+ and physical media.
After being postponed due to the Covid-19 pandemic, Top Gun: Maverick has proven that no delay could keep it from becoming a runaway success. The film’s totals also show that Cruise remains one of Hollywood’s biggest action stars and that crowds will line up to see his latest death-defying acts on the silver screen. With two more Mission: Impossible movies on the way in 2023 and 2024 and an untitled Space X project in the works, Cruise might as well build a Scrooge McDuck-style money bin for all the cash he’ll make.
