These days Tony Goldwyn is probably best known for playing President Fitzgerald Grant in seven seasons of the Shonda Rimes show Scandal, but to me he'll always be Darren from JASON LIVES: FRIDAY THE 13TH PART VI. Whether he's showing up in GHOST, THE BELKO EXPERIMENT (pictured above), THE LAST HOUSE ON THE LEFT 2009, or any of the other 75+ things he has worked on, every time I see him I think, "It's Darren!" JASON LIVES was Goldwyn's screen debut, and he has a memorable encounter with horror icon Jason Voorhees in that movie.
I'm going to be having another "It's Darren!" moment when I watch the HBO series Lovecraft Country, as Goldwyn has signed on to guest star on the show as a character named Samuel Braithwhite, "patriarch of his family, who views people as assets and objects and outsiders — including his daughter Christina — as inferiors."
Based on a novel by Matt Ruff, Lovecraft Country has been written by showrunner Misha Green and will show us what happens when
Atticus Black joins up with his friend Letitia and his Uncle George to embark on a road trip across 1950s Jim Crow America in search of his missing father. Thus begins a struggle to survive and overcome both the racist terrors of white America and the terrifying monsters that could be ripped from a Lovecraft paperback.
Jonathan Majors, Jurnee Smollett-Bell, and Courtney B. Vance are playing Atticus, Letitia, and Uncle George, with Aunjanue Ellis as George's wife Hippolyta; Wunmi Mosaku as Letitia's less successful hustler sister Ruby; Jamie Harris as country sheriff Eunice Hunt; Michael Kenneth Williams as Atticus's missing father, Montrose Freeman; Erica Tazel as Montrose's spitfire wife Dora; Jamie Chung as nursing student Ji-Ah; Jamie Neumann as Hillary, an outdoorsy woman whose dreams turn into nightmares in the big city; Mac Brandt as corrupt Chicago cop Lancaster; Abbey Lee (replacing the originally announced Elizabeth Debicki) as Christina Braithwhite, "the only daughter of Samuel Braithwhite, the leader of a secret order calling themselves the Sons of Adam"; and Jordan Patrick Smith as Christina's henchman William.
The Lovecraft Country series is coming to us from Monkeypaw Productions, Bad Robot, and Warner Bros. Television. Green is executive producing the show with pilot director Yann Demange, episode director Daniel Sackheim, Ben Stephenson, Bill Carraro, J.J. Abrams, and GET OUT / US filmmaker Jordan Peele.
There's no word on exactly when the show will be premiering on HBO. While we wait for that announcement, copies of the Ruff novel can be purchased at THIS LINK.
