Tommy Wirkola’s 2009 Nazi zombie flick DEAD SNOW was a fun, if somewhat flawed, homage to the genre, filled with an absurdly over-the-top concept, buckets of the red stuff, sly references to some of filmdoms best zombie movies, and some witty dialogue. An international hit, the film went on to receive highly-favorable reviews from both critics and fans worldwide, with many hoping to see a sequel since the ending was left wide open for a continuation. Today we have word that Wirkola is planning on returning to his native Norway to do just that.
Wikola, who recently scored another international hit with his HANSEL & GRETEL: WITCH HUNTERS generating more than $100 million at the worldwide box office, has confirmed that DEAD SNOW 2: WAR OF THE DEAD is in the works.
DEAD SNOW 2: WAR OF THE DEAD follows the sole survivor of a Nazi zombie attack who battles an even larger army of Zombies with the help of the Zombie Squad, a professional gang of zombie killers from the US.
While rumors of an American remake of DEAD SNOW have persisted over the past couple of years, Wirkola and company thought it would work best to return to the undead mayhem he started by continuing the story himself, stating,
“Ever since we premiered Dead Snow at Sundance 2009, I’ve been getting questions on a sequel, and now, after HANSEL & GRETEL: WITCH HUNTERS has been released, the time is finally right.”
“We have a script that I am super excited about, which is bigger, scarier, funnier, more action-filled and gorier than the previous one, and I can’t wait to unleash another horde of undead Nazi zombies onto the world again.”
Filming on the sequel to the cult hit is set to begin mid-2013.
