Tom Holland tried, failed to pitch a young James Bond movie

Tom Holland has accomplished a lot in his 25 years of living, including headlining the biggest film of 2021 during the pandemic with the massive success of Spider-Man: No Way Home, and you would think that anything he touches would be gold but that wasn’t the case with his pitch for a young James Bond movie.

During a chat with “Total Film Magazine” to promote the February release of Uncharted, Holland revealed that he pitched the studio on a young James Bond movie that would serve as an origin story for the world-famous spy. Needless to say, the idea didn’t really stick:

“I had a meeting, after or during Spider-Man 2 [Spider-Man: Far From Home], with Sony to pitch this idea of a young Bond film I’d come up with. It was the origin story of James Bond. It didn’t really make sense. It didn’t work. It was a dream of a young kid, and I don’t think the Bond estate [was] particularly interested.”

In a sort of weird way, his pitch wasn’t a total failure. According to Holland, his interest in doing the Bond origin story is what made Sony consider adapting the blockbuster Uncharted video game series. The actor said, “The idea of a young Bond sparked this idea, in turn, that you could do a Nathan Drake story as an origin story, rather than as an addition to the games. And that opened a conversation.”

Uncharted, directed by Ruben Fleischer, serves as the origin story for protagonist Nathan Drake (Tom Holland) from the video games of the same name created by Amy Hennig. Uncharted is an action-adventure game that follows Drake, a treasure hunter, who travels across the world to uncover various historical mysteries. The main series began with “Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune”, released on PlayStation 3 in 2007, and was followed by several sequels. The series has been universally acclaimed and commercially successful, having shipped more than 41 million units, making it one of the best-selling video game franchises of all time. The film also stars Mark Wahlberg as his future mentor Victor Sullivan along with a supporting cast that includes Antonio Banderas, Sophia Taylor Ali, and Tati Gabrielle. Uncharted hits screens on February 18, 2022.
