Tom Holland says that Spider-Man’s main goal is to become an Avenger

We're on our third big-screen incarnation of Spider-Man in just fifteen years, but, if all goes as planned with SPIDER-MAN: HOMECOMING, we can probably expect Tom Holland to stick around for the foreseeable future. While speaking with Yahoo Movies during a Facebook Live Q&A, Holland was asked to highlight a few of the differences between his version of Spidey and those played by Tobey Maguire and Andrew Garfield. Beyond the obvious age differences and not rushing the character out of high-school, Tom Holland says that the biggest difference is that Spider-Man now has a significant goal in mind: joining the Avengers.

I think the difference now is that Peter Parker finally has an all-time goal, and his goal is to become an Avenger. Everything he does, even though he’s doing it for the right reasons, is done so that maybe one day he can become an Avenger and prove himself to Tony Stark. And I think we’ve never really seen Spider-Man with that kind of motivation before. But it's also really nice to just see a kid with superpowers, you know, we've seen the scientist, the billionaire, the god, now it's time to see what would happen if a kid was given those responsibilities. And it's fun, it makes it more funny because he doesn't really know what to do with them, how to use them, when to use them and it's just a very different grounded version of what I think superhero movies are.

We caught a taste of Peter Parker's Avengers-related aspirations in CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR, but as to joining the team as a full-fledged member, we'll have to wait a little longer. Tom Holland will appear in AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR on May 4, 2018 and it's untitled sequel on May 3, 2019, followed by a sequel to SPIDER-MAN: HOMECOMING on July 5, 2019. Avenger or not, we've certainly got lots of Spidey ahead of us.

A young Peter Parker/Spider-Man (Tom Holland), who made his sensational debut in Captain America: Civil War, begins to navigate his newfound identity as the web-slinging super hero in Spider-Man: Homecoming. Thrilled by his experience with the Avengers, Peter returns home, where he lives with his Aunt May (Marisa Tomei), under the watchful eye of his new mentor Tony Stark (Robert Downey, Jr.). Peter tries to fall back into his normal daily routine – distracted by thoughts of proving himself to be more than just your friendly neighborhood Spider-Man – but when the Vulture (Michael Keaton) emerges as a new villain, everything that Peter holds most important will be threatened.

SPIDER-MAN: HOMECOMING will hit theaters on July 7, 2017.
